Sir Alex Ferguson said he was "born in possession" and it has now been revealed Spanish midfield maestro Xavi came close to joining Manchester United.

The former Barcelona star, now playing for Al Saad in the Qatar Stars League, told that he had talks with United, but his heart remained with the Catalan club.

Asked if he was ever close to signing for an English club, Xavi said: "Sometimes with Manchester United, but I was thinking always about Barcelona. I feel Barcelona in my heart. I think it is the best club in the world. But sometimes we were discussing with United to try and join there. Now I am at the end of my career it would have been nice to play in England, Italy or a different country. But no, I decided to play in Barcelona because it is my club."

Now 37, Xavi, in his second year with Al Saad, will call it a day at the end of the current season in Qatar and hopes to become a coach. He said: "In my last season [with Barcelona] I couldn't do it anymore. I was winning all the trophies. Never in my life could I have imagined my career would be like that."

The prospect of the player born in possession playing for United never became a reality, but he must surely be the best player Fergie never signed.
