Q. David hello, is this one of the reasons you took the job, a Champions League Quarter Final against the holders and one of the best club teams in the world?

DM “Most definitely, it’s a really good competition, it’s been very good for us so far in my short time here, I came into it as a very inexperienced manager in the CL but we’ve done well, and now we’ve got the ultimate test in Bayern Munich.”

more translator nonsense after every question

Q. Is it better off for you and the players in the sense that obviously with Bayern being the holders and everyone expecting them to win, is the pressure off you and more on them?

DM “I think the pressure is equally balanced because we want to win the game as much as Bayern Munich do, we go into the game knowing on our day we are as good a side as any, we have to show it more often than we have done but I’ve got great belief in the players, I’ve said that from day 1, and it hasn’t changed, and I get the feeling they all want to play, the players all want to play, even I can tell by their training their attitude they are saying, ‘look, this is a big game’, and they all want to play in the big games, that’s where over the years the players here have wanted to do.”

Q. Ryan Giggs, I see the game ’99 in Barcelona, what’s the difference the Manchester team 1999 and now 2014?

RG “The players, obviously, apart from myself! Obviously the players are different off both sides, but the tradition and the clubs are still the same, two huge clubs, two great histories, and two football teams that play football the correct way and when Bayern play United it’s always a great spectacle whether it be in the CL Final or whether it be like tomorrow in the Quarter FInals, two massive clubs.”

Q. David, how is Rafael, and how do you see the battle with Robben and Ribery given that Buttner will be playing left-back probably instead of Evra?

DM: “Well we have defensive issues undoubtedly. I won’t be giving out my team today, certainly not to Bayern and certainly not to you either but we will, as everybody is well aware have to make one or two changes.”

Q. Ryan, you’ve played heaven knows how many times against Bayern over the years, how does it feel to come into this game with many neutrals making Bayern pretty clear favourites?

RG “Yeah, obviously Bayern are a fantastic team, they are the holders, and obviously Pep Guardiola’s took over and added a few new players and they are obviously a very strong team and you like you say probably favourites in most people’s eyes, but we’re Manchester United, it’s at Old Trafford and we’ve seen so many great nights in Europe especially, so as players we don’t see ourselves as underdogs, we see ourselves as Man United playing at home in the Champions League and we can’t wait - these are the games you want to be involved in as a player and we’ll go out there and try and win the game. It’s going to be tough but it usually is in the Quarter Finals of the CL, but no, we’re confident. Looking forward to it.”

Q. What do you make of Bayern as a side and what makes you think you can combat them?

DM “Well Bayern were a very good side last year, won the Champions League, and had a good team and they’ve looked to try and add to that again this season. New manager, and they’ve continued, we congratulate them on winning the title and they are probably the side where most people look to recently. But we’ve got to go into the game knowing that we have to try and come here and get a good result if we can to take it to Germany and we’ll try and do that.”

Q. Do you see this as a game with the 1st leg coming first (?!) that you take the game to them and you play an attacking form of football to try and take something to Germany?

DM “I think it’s an obvious thing to say but it’s a two legged, the game, and we have to make sure that the two legs are important, both games, so we have to be mindful of we want to go out to Germany with every opportunity of going through so I think in the 1st leg, I think there’s always a little bit of cautiousness, but I think in the end we’d love to go to Germany with a victory under our belt, if we can do that then it it will set us up nicely for a result.”

Q. How do you view the tactical battle between you and Guardiola? Because this guy has won Champions Leagues, the German and Spanish title, he is regarded as the best coach in the world so how do you view the kind of personal battle between yourselves?

“I’m really looking forward to coming up against him, it’s the first time I’ve done so, but I’ve got no doubt I’ll be doing it plenty of times in the future. And he’s done incredibly well, the jobs he’s been in, he’s had a year to get himself ready for the Bayern job as well, which I think has helped him and as we said earlier, he’s taken over a really good side, a side which were already the Champions of Europe, but his record up to now has been very, very good.”

Q. David, Shinji has a quite incredible record against Bayern, he has played 4 matches and 4 wins, especially in a Final match, he scored 1 and set up 1, so is that something positive for tomorrow’s match?

“Something which we seriously consider because Shinji’s a really important player to us, we like him a lot, gives us something different and he’s certainly in our thoughts for tomorrow night’s game.”

Q. David, after Arsenal played in Munich, Wenger described Robben as a great player but also a great diver, is that something you have to tell your players about?

“No, we trust the referees to make the right decisions. I think, I have mentioned it many times, diving is one of the hardest things for refs to get right, I would have retrospective diving cameras to pick that out, I think it would help the refs, that’s my own personal view; I wouldn’t comment on any individual player. I think it’s a hard job for the refs, but I think they could do with a little bit of help when it comes to that.”

Q. David, how are you dealing with the day to day pressures of this job in your first year and Ryan do you yourself one day moving over a foot and serving in the same capacity? (OUCH!!)

(Karen Shotbolt laughs, few nervous laughs abound, Moyes smiles)

Shotbolt: “We’re here to talk about the Champions League, any questions on the game, ok.”

Q. David, in Munich there is big discussion about the future from Toni Kroos, why is he so fantastic?

“Why do I think he’s so fantastic?”

Q. What’s so special about Toni Kroos?

“Well I don’t know where you had your information from! But I think Bayern Munich have lots of good players not just Toni Kroos, I think they have several good players, and I would never talk about one individual player at another club in any other way than them being at Bayern and Toni Kroos is a Bayern Munich player.”

Q. David, Bayern Munich gave city a bit of a lesson here, is there any fear that could happen to your side here at Old Trafford?

DM: “Well we want to make sure we play well, we want keep improving, we’ve had little signs recently that we’ve had some good results, we need to try and build on that, but undoubtedly and we’ve said many times already, we’re playing against a good side, but it’s the sort of nights in past history United have risen to and we hope we’ll do that tomorrow night. We’ll need to play very well but the way I’ve seen the players, we’ll set out to do that tomorrow.”

Q. Ryan, the team has been criticised quite a lot this season, it’s been criticised recently by Gary Neville and Paul Scholes who are ex-team-mates of yours, friends of yours, is that fair criticism and a further question; nobody is talking about this team winning the Champions League, beating Bayern, going on to win it, is that possible?

RG: “Yeah, of course it’s possible. But obviously you need to play well, you need that little bit of luck which probably last year we didn’t have, in the game against Madrid we were probably in control of the game until Nani got sent off we just didn’t have that little bit of luck and Arsenal against Bayern in the last game, sending off, when they were in the game, they didn’t have that little bit of luck so of course the times that we’ve won the CL you need to play well but also you need that little bit of luck and we’re hoping for that.”

“Where as being criticised, as a Man Utd player, comes with the territory, you get criticised, you lose a game you get criticised, it’s something that you’ve got to come to terms with, not prove people wrong but just go out and try and do your best, that’s what the lads will be trying to do tomorrow and if we can do that then we’ll have a great chance.”

Q. Ryan, can you use 1999 to inspire the players tomorrow night and are you up against the best club team in the world at the moment?

RG “Well they are the holders and they have obviously had a fantastic season, so we know we’re up against a team that has got great individuals and a great team so yeah we know it’s going to be a tough task, whether using 1999, I don’t think we’ll probably do that, some of the lads probably don’t even remember ’99! We know that it’s going to be tough, but it’s an exciting one, I say, it’s at Old Trafford, Champions League, and against a very good team, as a player you want to test yourself against the best and we’re going to be doing that tomorrow.”

Q. Ryan, you played very well in the last CL game against Olympiakos, but do you feel that you’ve been under used somewhat this season as some believe you have and how is the relationship between you and the manager?

RG “Laughs. Erm, no the relationship is good, yeah I mean of course as a player you want to play all the time, I know that I’ve got experience over last 5 or 6 years I know I’m not going to play every game, I probably played every 2 or 3 weeks, to probably get the best out of me, yeah the last time I played was probably the first time in six or seven weeks but we’ve got a lot of players to choose from, like you said you seen from the performance against Olympiakos, I’m always ready to play and that’s what you’ve got to do, not sulk because you’re not playing, you’ve got to be ready to play for the team and that’s what I was and the players tomorrow if they are not playing, they have got to be ready to come out and perform, but no, there is obviously no problem with the manager. There’s a lot of stuff that has been said…”

DM interrupts “I’m doing his yoga classes now, see if that helps me”

RG “…But there’s not been a problem. I don’t know where that come from.”

Q. Ryan, we did presume that this would be your final playing season until we saw you play against Olympiakos, and then we started to wonder, is this your final European campaign or is it there a bit of you that thinks you might squeeze in another year out of your body?

RG: “I don’t know! I’ll tell you after tomorrow maybe! No, I don’t know, just trying to enjoy this season really and then at the end of the season I’ll take stock and see what I want to do, but I’m enjoying my football as much as ever, I feel fit, but I’ll make that decision at the end of the season.”
